Poultry Farming for Nigerians: Major Challenges for Small Farmers   Leave a comment

One of the major challenges in the business besides the high cost of feeding is the chicken waste management and evacuation. The layers chickens during the egg production phase generate a lot of chicken droppings which can become a nightmare for a farmer who is not prepared for the challenge.

For those who have their small farms in residential areas, this can cause a headache and an inconvenience to the neighbors. The chicken droppings if not properly managed can cause the neighborhood to be hostile towards the farm. The odour from the chicken droppings is a health hazard.

Setting up a small farm in a residential area, the farmer must know how to dispose the chicken droppings. It is advised that the chicken droppings be evacuated every 3 days either the farms operates the deep litter system to avoid serious health dangers to the chickens which are within reach of their droppings.

The health risk is worse in the deep litter system because the chicken waste contains ammonia which constitutes a grave health risk. But if the farms operates a battery cage system that has a gutter or pit beneath the battery cages where the chicken droppings accumulate, the health risks are reduced as the chickens are further away from their droppings.
